Koizumi spent a while pondering this, but then he snapped his fingers.

“Aha! This is one of those,” he said.

And what would those be?

“I’m starting to see the pattern. At a glance, the story appears quite ordinary, yet there is a mystery hidden within—and the fun lies in figuring out what.”

So is this also not the case Tsuruya initially mentioned in her first e-mail?

“Likely not. I’m unsure of her intent, but instead of dealing with the fallout of that case, Tsuruya has sent us two stories about this friend of hers, each with something hidden. While we wait for the next e-mail, we shall have to ponder what. I suppose that’s the goal, at least.”

The last e-mail immediately spilled the beans, yeah.

“Kyon,” Haruhi said, standing up and jabbing a finger at the screen. “Print out enough copies of this file for everyone.”

We all have our own laptops, so you could just transfer the data. I guess that would leave T out, but I was surprised Haruhi was being that considerate. I assumed the chief’s chair, ordered the printer to run six copies of the second attachment, and only then did I realize I’d forgotten to yell at Haruhi for failing to master basic computer functions.

She probably hadn’t read my mind, but Asahina eagerly announced, “I’ll do the rest!”

Without delay, she scooped up the pages from the printer, dividing them into six stacks and binding each into little booklets with paper clips.

Apron frills ruffling, she handed them all out, leaving her own copy on the table before turning her attention to new cups of tea. Clearly far more important to her than deciphering Tsuruya’s writings.

Meanwhile, Haruhi swapped seats with me, allowing me to return to my own. Once there, I started reading through the ten pages of text-laden A4 paper.

It was impressive how well Tsuruya had captured her own voice in print. Haruhi’s flawless impersonation of her might have helped. Since I’d already heard all this before, I was able to skim through pretty quick.

As Asahina poured water into the pot, the rest of us flipped through the material we had received thus far.

MysClub T was the first to look up.

“I still know but the barest teaspoon of modern Japanese. So might I ask—is Tsuruya writing in anything resembling a conventional literary style?”

“They’re written in a distinctive colloquial voice,” Koizumi said, “but that’s not unusual for first-person writing. There are certainly a few places that tripped me up, but…let’s put that aside. I have a proposal.”

Smiling breezily, he raised an index finger…and then his middle finger, too.

“What say we refer to the story set in her childhood as Episode One, and the hot spring and grape-stomping adventure as Episode Two? It seems likely an Episode Three will arrive in due time, so this will make it easier to distinguish between them.”

No reason to oppose that. Only thing bothering me is how many of Tsuruya’s travel episodes we were gonna be stuck with. I dunno where she is now, but I hope this all wraps up before school closes for the evening.
